Heather's Tumblr Log

Now it all makes sense! (Posterous)

I’ve been waiting for one of the two mid-blogging platforms (Tumblr & Posterous) to make some big move. Something that made me NEED to use them. Simplify my life. Cook my family dinner. Cure my dry eye. Something.

Well today that something happened. As of today, I can blog on Posterous with full media support and post to any or all of my 3 blogs and several key social networks. Rock on.

Think about this. Sign in to one place (Posterous) and post anywhere you typically interact. Now that’s a timesaver. Maybe now I can find time to patch that hole in the wall.

But, with this power comes great responsibility. A few things to NOT do with your new super posting ability.

First, watch out for duplicate content on your blogs. If you run a family blog, a personal blog, and a professional one, pick the one mist applicable and post there. Duplicate content is poison for your search engine ranking, and you want to use you powers for good, not evil, right?

Second, it’s become a recent pet peeve of mine when folks blindly post content to social networks they never typically interact within, like MySpace (haha, but not really…). So only post from Posterous to networks you are currently active on, not just ones that exist. Thanks. I’ll sleep better tonight now that I said that.

Third, keep an eye out for duplicate postings across your social network. If you have Twitter updating Facebook already (use TweetPo.st!), you don’t need Posterous to update both Facebook and Twitter.

And lastly, I still warn about getting too vested in any one tool/network/app. Posterous got the big story today, but keep an eye out for what else may trump even this development. In other words, don’t count Tumblr out yet…
